Customize a Claude plugin without losing the original

Copy first, edit the copy, keep the original installed. Tested on Claude Code v2.1.296, plus the documented Cowork upload path.

By Arun BabuIntermediate

A plugin is plain files, so customizing one safely is mostly about not editing the only copy. The method below is tested on Claude Code v2.1.296 (October 2026) for the file side, with the Cowork upload path from Anthropic's docs.

Rule one: never edit the installed copy

Plugins installed from a marketplace get overwritten on update. Edit a copy instead:

  1. Copy the plugin's folder to your own directory. For a skills-directory plugin that is ~/.claude/skills/plugin-name; for a marketplace plugin, clone its repository.
  2. Rename it - the name lives in the SKILL.md frontmatter or the manifest, and two plugins with the same name collide. Kebab-case, per the validation rules in plugin validation failed.
  3. Keep the original installed and enabled until the copy proves itself. Disable beats delete while you compare (see disable or remove safely).

What you are editing

Most of a plugin's behavior is text: the description field that decides when Claude uses a skill, and the procedure body it follows. Small wording changes there change real behavior, so edit one thing, reload, and test before the next change. In Claude Code, /reload-plugins picks up file edits without a restart (verified with init-scaffolded plugins on v2.1.296).

Version your copy

A customized plugin is now YOUR software. Put the copy in git from the first edit - a private repo is free, and when the original updates you can diff its changes against your copy instead of guessing what you modified.

The Cowork path

Anthropic's docs: you can upload a custom plugin file in Cowork (Customize > Plugins), so a customized copy you built as a zip installs the same way as any custom plugin. Plugins are saved to your account and follow you across devices. Two documented limits: plugins added from a marketplace cannot be shared with colleagues, and on Team or Enterprise plans an admin can restrict which plugins you may install - if the upload option is missing on a work plan, that is why.
